Class Highlights

1. I really enjoyed the discussions on Public Relations. I found it useful to know that I could jump around into different careers in the PR business. It also made me look into working in the advertisement business.

2. I liked the presentation on piracy. I knew that it was a common thing, but I still thought not that many people I knew did it. I realized that even though government tries to stop websites from peer to peer sharing it will probably never end. Also I didn't know that buying records don't help artist that much, but instead it helps the record companies.

3.When we focused on how popular social media sites were it made me realize that everything I put online is no longer safe. It made me be more careful to what I put on as well as who I let view my profiles.

Media Law/Ethics Propaganda in PR & Advertising

Though the Limewrie lawsuit is from 2010 I still wanted to use it because it's had lawsuit threats and issues since at least 2008. Peer too peer sharing otherwise known as piracy is legal in the united states, and yet it's still a common way to get movies, music, and programs. Limewire being one of the most popular sites since Napster is not only being sued as a company but the article reads, "Mark Gorton, LimeWire’s founder, is also being held liable for assisting users in committing copyright infringement."

Propaganda in PR

The Adidas ad below shows examples of "beautiful people" as well as "bandwagon" techniques. The video is filled with hot celebrities and party goers in a fun party environment which leads you to think that if you own their products your going to be cool. By using the bandwagon technique they hope that everyone will see that celebs wear Adidas so they should too, giving it that effect of being just like celebs. That's where the beautiful people technique comes in, celebs in ads make people feel the need to own that product because it's bringing them a step closer to a famous lifestyle, at least that's how I view it.

Internet

I counted well over 150 sites. For most of them I wasn't familiar with, but it did show the popular ones such as; Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Myspace, Xanga, Linkedin, eMatch ect. A site I wasn't familiar with was "Fotolog".

It's a photo blogging site popular in Spain and South America with over 30 million. The concept is similar to PhotoBooth which is popular in the US and other countries.
I like to use social sites to not only keep in touch with friends, but to stay up to date with whats going on around the world. A lot of times where social sites aren't helpful are usually when I'm studying. Facebook and Twitter constantly distract me which leads into grades dropping. There are moments where Twitter is helpful though. I use it to keep to date with current events.

Chapter 2: Media Impact
Question: Is it hard to keep up with the friends now that there are more social networks out.

Answer: Yes because instead of just texting someone I feel the need to check my email, facebook and twitter, (at one point myspace as well) in order to see if someone is trying to contact me. It gets tangled in a cyber community where you feel the need to check all social networking sites in order to see if anyone is trying to contact you.

Movies

In 2009 I went to see 500 Days of Summer in theaters. It was definitely my favorite movie. Not only was it because I love Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Dechanel, but the story line of it not being your typical happy ending was what got me hooked. Throughout the movie you see the two characters grow in what seems is love and then it gives you the twist of heart break. Overall the witty comments and the soundtrack just added to the movie's greatness.

One of my favorite movies of all time would probably be Alice in Wonderland. I first saw this movie on VHS when I was maybe seven and ever since I was in love of how magical this movie was. The graphics and plot of the story just make me think that anything out of the ordinary is always possible. Even if the story isn't real it gives the feeling of always being a kid.

Name: Nostalgic Streets
Concept:
World wide street fashion, culture, art & music. Not just focusing on one specific, "Street culture is world wide". Unlike other magazines that focus on one location, or girl magazines like Cosmo that focus on sex, Nostalgic Streets give's you the feeling of what you were used to whether you've experienced other urban cultures, seen it in magazines or movies, or simply just want the feel of knowing what urban fashion, art, and music are like around the world.
Readers:
Age group targeted would be around 16-25, males and females who can appreciate fashion, art, and music styles of the past that are now making their ways of being popular again. The people who go to art shows to see graffiti displays, modern feel sculptures, all unique art. Music lovers who stray away from the mainstream radio hits. People who see fashion as an art form and representation of one's self.

Books

My first year in college I took a social psychology class and read Survivor, by Chuck Palanuik. This book was not only an interesting read, but it had parts that were so clever you just wanted to continue. Like other books by Palanuik this book is also mysterious. It has been influential to me because it has allowed me to realize every side of a negative situation and that not all books are boring.

Another book I read that was influential was Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. Reading it in middle school and again in high school I learned a lot of things about being a teen and how vicious "girl world" can be. This book was helpful to see what abused girls go through as well as informative.

Third book I would say is Walking on Water by Derrick Jensen. This book was required for Humanities 1. I liked it because it wasn't really a story novel type of read, but more of a "how to" on being creative and seeing life for what it is. I showed me how other countries have kids explore their creative side, how famous people were once regular and felt restricted without having an outlet for creativity.

Media Impact

I would want to do a study on how teen girls rely on magazines such as Cosmo, Teen Vogue, and Seventeen for their fashion and makeup influences. I would have a few girls from ages 16-20 read through the magazines and then the next day I would bring out a bunch of featured items in that magazine and see what the items the girls say is the best. I would do this probably three times just to get many girls opinions and then from there I would find out if the magazines would have an impact. Myself being a girl I would assume majority of the girls would pick the same products listed in the magazine. Maybe not all because of preference, but I would think most at least.

My Media Autobiography

Growing up, my generation media has mainly been based off of television, internet, movies, and magazines. The media itself has evolved. I now no longer need to actually buy a newspaper to see what is going on in the world. I am constantly spending my day checking my blackberry which has my email, facebook, twitter, and my texts. Since the media has evolved so much I literally rely on the internet for information. With sites like Twitter and Facebook I am instantly updated on current pop culture news without having to witness it on TV.

With music, I don't listen to the radio as much as I used to and now being able to download music I haven't purchased CD's or songs on Itunes in years. I personally find it to be more convenient to download music and upload it to my iPod than to have to go and buy CD's morally I understand it's stealing, but with the internet advancing and opening doors for people it's kind of hard to think people won't do it.

I hate that I rely on my blackberry twenty four seven, but at the same time I like having everything I need in my hand. The internet and TV has made it seem that you need to be up to date with everything going around socially. Growing up I didn't care about going online so much as to watching my favorite cartoons or going outside. I feel like the way society is going with the media that future kids will feel no need to go outside because priority will be the internet and the television, leaving books no where to be found.

I would like to find myself working as a public relations or a journalist. I am so interested with what goes on with today's pop cultural that I could see myself writing for a trendy magazine or even a TV caster for a pop culture show.
